Brigg holds holocaust Remembrance service

The theme for 2016 is ‘Don’t Stand By’, mindful of the many refugees and displaced persons in the troubled Middle East during the past year, as well as the 10,000 Jewish victims in the Second World War.

The annual remembrance event was well attended and supported by representatives of Sir John Nelthorpe School and The Vale Academy.

Brigg Town Council has a proud long-standing association with the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and a memorial stands in the courtyard at which ten stones were laid in keeping with tradition.

Brigg MP Andrew Percy laid the first stone, followed by Town Mayor James Truepenny and representatives of the local Jewish community, as well as students from the town’s schools.

The ten stones represent the ten million people who lost their lives at the hands of Hitler’s Nazis.

The service was led by the Rev Ian Wales, Methodist Minister in Brigg, while music for the singing of hymns was played by Keith and Maria Simpson.

Psalm 23 was read by Molly Baker of The Vale Academy, while Sam Davies, James Smalley and May Hirst of Sir John Nelthorpe School provided other readings.

Andrew Percy MP read the poem Auschwitz and the Rev Wales told the story of Nicholas Winton.

Tony Sevilla-Harland of the Jewish Community read The Kaddish.
