Crowdfunder aims to help family of Skegness dad in hospice with incurable head and neck cancer

A devoted dad with incurable cancer has thanked the Skegness community for their prayers as he announces his treatment has now stopped.

A crowdfunder has been set up to help Daniel Singleton and his family as they now face the unthinkable.

The 38 year-old father of five is now in the care of St Barnabas Hospice in Lincoln after months of battling head and neck cancer.

It was May, 2025, when Dan’s cancer journey began after he was found to have Leukoplakia in the roof of his mouth – a condition which causes patches in the mouth, which are mostly benign, but can be pre-cancerous. Dan says it was several months before his concerns were taken seriously by doctors, and that a rare and existing condition he has called Dyskeratosis Congenita (DKC1 variant) ultimately caused the cancer.

After two biopsies were taken, Dan and his family were given the devastating news that his cancer was stage three.

Writing on his Facebook page ‘Dan’s Journey and Battle’ this week, Daniel said: “As most of you already know, I'm now in the hospice. I'm sleeping a lot more now.

“I want to let everyone know that, at this point, all of my cancer treatment has now stopped. The focus has changed.

“We're no longer trying to fight the cancer with treatment. The incredible people here are doing everything they can to keep me comfortable, manage my symptoms and look after me as best as they possibly can.”

He added that his priority now is time with his family, adding: “Thank you for every message, comment, prayer, share, bit of encouragement and every ounce of love you've sent my way.

“Whether you've been here from the beginning or only recently found Dan's Journey & Battle, I appreciate you more than you'll probably ever realise.”

Speaking to the Standard, family friend Anita Last who set up their GoFundMe page, said: “Daniel is a husband, a dad of four boys and a son, and his illness has placed an enormous emotional and financial strain on the family. Daniel and his mum also run a small local business together, The Lemon Shed & That Flower Shop, creating planters, artificial flower displays and memorials for people in their community. Daniel’s illness has therefore affected not only his health and family life, but also the livelihood that he and his mum have built together. His wife Amanda is trying to continue working to support their family while also being there for Daniel and their children."

She added: “I just feel so sad for his family. I just hope that if we can get a little bit of help for them it will make a massive difference.”
