Flytipper fined after CCTV captures Gainsborough fridge dump

A Gainsborough resident has received a Fixed Penalty Notice after a large fridge was dumped in Roseway Car Park.

West Lindsey District Council’s enforcement team used footage captured by the council’s CCTV cameras to identify the offender after a member of the public reported the abandoned fridge in March this year.

The offender received a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN), which has since been paid in full. The maximum FPN for fly-tipping is currently £1,000.

Coun Jeanette McGhee, a ward member for Gainsborough South West Ward, said: “I would like to thank the member of the public for reporting this incident.

“Our officers work tirelessly to hold accountable those that commit these environmental crimes, but they are far more successful with the support of the general public and this case highlights that reporting is key to tackling this problem.

“Flytipping is not just selfish and an eyesore but abandoned electrical items can also pose a risk to the environment and public health.”

The successful outcome also reflects the council’s wider commitment to using available evidence to investigate environmental offences and protect public spaces.

Andy Gray, Head of Environmental Services at West Lindsey District Council, said: “This case should serve as a warning to anyone who thinks they can get away with fly-tipping.

“We take these offences seriously and will use the evidence available to identify offenders and pursue enforcement action wherever possible. It also demonstrates the important role our CCTV team and camera network play in helping to keep our district clean and safe.”

The council is reminding residents what to do if they discover fly-tipped waste do not touch it as fly-tipped waste could be dangerous or hazardous; visually inspect the waste to determine its contents; do not disturb the site as there may be important evidence and take note of its exact location.

Reports from residents can provide officers with the information and evidence needed to investigate incidents and take action against those responsible.

Bryan Gash, Enforcement Officer at West Lindsey District Council, said: “Flytipping of any size damages our environment and has a negative impact on the communities we serve.

“We are grateful to the residents who report incidents and provide evidence, as their support can be vital in helping us identify those responsible and ensure justice.”
