Tributes paid to 'devoted' Skegness paramedic after suffering fatal cardiac arrest on duty

Tributes have been paid to a ‘hero’ paramedic and family man who dedicated 40 years of his life to the ambulance service in Lincolnshire.

Tim Sands passed away suddenly on Friday, October 23, after suffering a cardiac arrest while on duty.

His family, and colleagues at East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) have issued tributes – pointing to his legacy of helping others, kindness to animals, and sense of humour.

Based at the Skegness Ambulance Station, Tim first joined the ambulance service in 1988, serving for nearly 40 years of his life.

“He began his career as an ambulance technician before progressing to paramedic, a role he held for the majority of his career, an EMAS spokesperson said.

“Outside of work, Tim enjoyed spending time with his wife, Dawn. He loved travelling, particularly visits to the Lake District, and the pair enjoyed going on cruises together.”

Reflecting on his father’s life and legacy, his son Luke said: “Dad dedicated almost 40 years of his life helping people in their time of need, so we are incredibly proud that, through organ donation, he has been able to continue helping others by giving three people a new lease of life.

“That was the man, and the hero, I have known for 27 years. Knowing that he has continued to save lives after his death is a lasting legacy and one that means a great deal to us as a family.

“Over the last week, we have seen just how respected and loved he was within EMAS. The support, kindness and memories shared by colleagues have brought us real comfort at such a difficult time, and we cannot thank people enough.”

Richard Henderson, EMAS Chief Executive commented: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a highly respected colleague. Tim’s dedication, professionalism and kindness impacted so many. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to work alongside him.”

David Forman, Station Manager for Skegness and Mablethorpe said: “One of the things I will remember most about Tim is his warmth and sense of humour. He was always smiling, always ready with a joke and always had time for a conversation.

“He took immense pride in his work and in supporting those around him. Over the years he became a much-loved colleague and friend to many people across the service, and his loss will be felt deeply.”

Sue Cousland, Divisional Director for Lincolnshire said: “Tim is fondly remembered and will be sorely missed by colleagues, patients and families alike.

“His approach out on the East Coast was far more than that of a job and he was an extremely kind, considerate and compassionate clinician. He left a very positive impression upon everyone he met, including his feline friends. Our thoughts are with Dawn, Luke and Tim’s wider family at such a sad time.”

Tim’s niece Heather Webster has set up a GoFundMe to support the family with funeral costs.

She said: “A devoted family man, Tim shared 30 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Dawn, and leaves behind his son, Luke, and treasured grandson, Blake. He was a much-loved twin to Chris and brother to Jim, Sarah and Liz. He will be deeply missed by all his family, friends and colleagues.

"Tim also had a special love for animals, particularly cats, and would always seek them out wherever he went. It was a little part of his character that those who knew him will fondly remember.

“In one final, selfless act, Tim donated his organs, giving others the precious gift of life. After spending so many years caring for others, he continued to make a difference right until the very end.

“Tim leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion and dedication. He will be remembered for his years of service, his love for his family and animals and the countless lives he touched.”

She added: “This GoFundMe has been set up to support Dawn and Luke during an incredibly difficult and heart-breaking time. We are hoping to raise funds to help towards funeral costs and essential bills, easing some of the financial pressure they are facing whilst suffering through this difficult period.”
