Arson-damaged Remembrance topper is repaired and put back on display in Spilsby
A popular Remembrance display has been repaired and put back on display in Spilsby - after youths took it and set it on fire.
Despite being left a little “battle scarred” - the hand-made Lancaster topper is now, once again, sitting atop the town’s postbox.
As reported last week, there was uproar amongst locals, and those further afield in Lincolnshire, after youths took the topper - which was later discovered partially-burnt and dumped near woodland.
Post Office worker Joanne Herberts, who made the topper with the help of her parents, said she was devastated – but vowed to repair the crocheted artwork and return it to display in time for Remembrance Day.

Yesterday (Wednesday), Joanne announced the work was now complete, and the piece was back up.
Referring to her mum’s efforts, she said: “A little battle scarred, but ‘Mama Herbie’ as worked her magic to get it back out on display.”
Speaking about the effort, Joanne explained she had to repair various holes where the fabric had burnt with extra stitching, before adding more crocheted poppies to cover the imperfections: “One of the engines couldn’t be covered, but hopefully that’s not too noticeable as it’s black.”
It is understood that both youths have now apologised to Joanne for the incident, with one writing a card, and his mum offering for her son to carry out community work to make up for the distress caused.
