Lincolnshire Churches Conference set to showcase county’s hidden heritage in Heckington

Church lovers and history enthusiasts are being invited to a full day of fascinating talks and guided exploration when the Lincolnshire Churches Conference comes to Heckington this spring.

Organised by the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology, the conference promises a packed programme of illustrated presentations, alongside the recently released book Lincolnshire Churches by well-known author John Vigar.

Mr Vigar will deliver a lecture highlighting a selection of churches from across the county — many of which, organisers say, do not usually attract widespread attention.

Ian Newton will present Exploring Heraldry in Lincolnshire’s Churches, revealing the families and stories behind the shields found within church buildings. The Revd Angy Long will explore The Art of the Chapel, examining the spiritual meaning behind chapel architecture and stained glass, and how art reflects the concept of the ‘Church being People’.

Further talks include New Work on Old Monuments at St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham by John Manterfield, outlining recent conservation work on ten Georgian monuments, the individuals commemorated and the sculptors involved.

Brian Hodgkinson will also give a presentation entitled Tudor Paperwork: the Louth Churchwarden’s Accounts 1527–1570, offering insight into the financial and social life of a large and prosperous parish church during the Tudor period.

As part of the day, attendees will enjoy a guided visit to St Andrew’s Church, widely regarded as one of the most magnificent churches in the country. Dating from around 1307 and built in the Decorated style, the church boasts ornate exterior friezes, cornices and statue niches. Inside, visitors can view a rare Easter sepulchre and finely crafted sedilia.

Organisers say everyone is welcome to attend the full-day conference, which will take place on Saturday, April 18, at Heckington Village Hall from 10am to 4.30pm.

Tickets cost £34, or £26 for SLHA members, which includes a buffet lunch and tea and coffee. Pre-booking is essential, with the closing date for bookings set for April 1.

Further information about the Society and how to join can be found at www.slha.org.uk. Tickets can be booked via the SLHA website or through Eventbrite.
