Lincolnshire Police is working with the National Police Chief’s Council to highlight the law on wearing seatbelts in vehicles.

In a statement, a Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “It has been mandatory to use a seatbelt since the early 80s. They save lives.

“In Lincolnshire, in 2019, six people lost their lives while not wearing a seatbelt, this is 12% of people killed on our roads, lower than the national figure, but 6 precious lives lost.

“We issued 322 tickets to people not wearing seatbelt in 2019.

“Of the those tickets 27 were issued in relation to children who were not restrained, 36 for other passengers and 259 for drivers.

“The purpose of a seatbelt is to keep adults and children in their seats during a crash.

“The belt is designed to work with air bags and other safety systems in vehicles.

“Occupants are in real danger if they are not wearing one and we can’t understand why anyone would not use a seatbelt when their life could depend on it.

“We have raised awareness recently of speeding and using mobile phones which are two of the Fatal Four.

“Seatbelts and drink/drug driving are the other two categories.

“The Fatal Four are the most common contributory factors in collisions where people are killed in vehicles.

“Research show almost 95% of drivers and front seat passengers in cars wear seat belts and 89% of rear passengers wear seatbelts or child car restraints.

“Seat belt use in other vehicles is lower, down to 69% of drivers and front seat passengers. Adult men are less likely than women to wear a seat belt.*
