The pies that take the sweet and savoury crowns in celebration of British Pie Week

It’s official, Chicken and Mushroom has been voted the most popular savoury pie in the UK, according to new research revealed to celebrate British Pie Week (March 1 – March 7).

The Chicken and Mushroom took the savoury pie crown, beating out all-time classics like Steak and Ale and Steak and Kidney, according to new data revealed by online takeaway delivery app Foodhub.

Analysts from Foodhub researched orders placed via the app and website to determine the nation’s most popular pie, with Chicken and Mushroom coming out on top accounting for 8% of the overall savoury pie orders.

The quintessentially British classic Steak Pie wasn’t far behind, with Steak and Kidney coming in second (6%), followed by Steak and Ale (5%). It seems the UK are missing those visits to the pub for a hearty crusty classic!

When it comes to desserts, Brits seem to favour a sweet tooth, as the classic Apple Pie is out-selling the savoury selection, with 17% of orders placed on Foodhub’s platform.

Hot on the heels of Apple Pie was the English Banoffee (11%), followed by an over the pond classic, Tennessee Toffee Pie (2%) originating from America.

Wil Chung, Foodhub spokesperson, said: “You can’t beat a classic pie, whether that’s sweet or savoury, it’s a timeless dish that offers something for everyone.

“Our research has surprisingly shown that Chicken and Mushroom is the nation’s favourite, beating the more obvious choice of Steak and Ale or a Steak and Kidney pie.

“One surprise is that perennial favourite Meat and Potato didn’t even make it into the Top 5 UK pies.

“We’ve seen an increase in pie orders since lockdown first began, as people are undoubtedly missing those hearty pie-based meals.

“Here at Foodhub we offer a wide range of cuisine, whether you’re a Chicken and Mushroom lover, Steak and Ale fan or you prefer the sweet treat of an Apple Pie - we cater for all.”
