WATCH: Giant sand 'poster' created to honour upcoming Tour of Britain race in Skegness
A group of artists beat the tide this morning to create a giant sand poster to honour Skegness’ role in the upcoming Tour of Britain Men’s Race.
The huge 50m2 artwork can be viewed on the beach today (Thursday August 20), close to the Pier, as part of a celebration event being held in the town.
A spokesperson for East Lindsey District Council said: “Slowly emerging from the wet sands of Skegness beach, the unmistakable features of the town’s most famous character, the Jolly Fisherman, appeared this morning as rarely seen before.
“Carefully crafted in the sand, the iconic figure forms the focal point of a spectacular artwork created to celebrate Stage Two of the Lloyd’s Tour of Britain Men coming to East Lindsey and Boston on 3 September.

“This stunning sight greeted early visitors to the beach this morning thanks to the talented team from Sand in Your Eye who beat the tide to create an incredible sand art tribute.”
A ‘festival’ event to mark the occasion will be held in Tower Gardens today between 11am and 7.30pm – with street entertainers including a street circus, walkaround musical acts, a motorised piano and performers from Swank Street Theatre.
Stage Two of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men’s race will start in Boston on September 3 before travelling 180.2km across Lincolnshire and finishing in Skegness, bringing world-class cycling for thousands of spectators to witness across east Lincolnshire.
The council spokesperson added: “We can't wait to welcome riders, teams and spectators to the district.”
