Requests for town council funding for major projects in Horncastle should not develop into a competition.

That was the message from town councillor Dominic Hinkins at last week’s town council meeting.

Coun Hinkins is a leading figure in plans to develop a recreation ground/skate park - and also leads the fight to save Horncastle Youth Centre.

At the meeting, he proposed returning the £50,000 the council has earmaked for the recreation park project - with half that amount going to support the Youth Centre campaign.

After proposing the motion, Coun Hinkins said he was concerned councillors were arguing which was more important - the park or the youth centre.

He told councillors: “It doesn’t have to be either or. We can have our cake and eat it.

“We can fund the park in five stages and also help community groups by supporting them to raise funds for the projects they want - and that we could not justify.”

Coun Hinkin described the recreation ground as ‘extremely desirable’ and added: “Residents want it to happen and it would be wonderful thing for the town. “

However, he said it was wrong to earmark £50K to the project - when there were no firm details about how the money would be spent - unlike Horncastle Youth Centre.
