Road near Boston designated 'area of concern' amid complaints from residents about traffic

A road near Boston has been designated ‘an area of concern’ by the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership amid complaints from residents about how vehicles are using it.

West End Road, in Wyberton, hit the headlines earlier this year when a large sinkhole appeared at the London Road end of it.

It prompted calls from residents for more to be done to manage traffic along the road, which connects to the A52 at the other end.

Residents spoke of HGVs flouting the weight restriction on it, but also high levels of traffic and speeding.

The Standard put these concerns to Lincolnshire County Council and the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.

A spokesman for the council said: “West End Road remains subject to a weight restriction and drivers are expected to comply with all traffic regulations. Enforcement of speed limits and vehicle restrictions is primarily a matter for Lincolnshire Police.

“We will continue to consider concerns raised by residents and the parish council through our established highways processes, using available traffic, safety and site data to help inform any future decisions regarding the road.”

A spokesman for the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, which includes Lincolnshire Police as part of the multi-agency operation, said: “We understand the concerns of the local community. It is clear that some motorists will use West End Road to cut through between the A16 and the A52 instead of driving through Boston.

“Data would appear to support the fact that it has gotten busier too. A survey completed in 2022 showed just under 7,000 vehicles per day in June. A 2025 survey completed in May showed approximately 9,500.

“There have been four slight injury collisions in the last three years, although none were speed related, and there have been no serious or fatal collisions in that time period.

“A speed survey completed in the 30mph limit at the A52 end, showed approximately 34 per cent of vehicles exceeding the limit at enforceable levels.”

Concluding their statement, they said they have designated the location as ‘an area of concern’, adding that the partnership’s motorcycle enforcement officer will be deployed to help reduce offending.
