Ian Hatton’s team pushed them to the limit before Robinson and Whiteley emerged with an 18-17 win by the narrowest of margins. Keith Woffinden and Gordon Tucker are chasing the champs, but they too had to graft to beat the bottom team of John Grooby 14-10, while Eric Dobbie’s team rose to third place after beating John Alsop’s team 17-11.

In the Friday Evening Triples League, it was the turn of Eric Dobbie’s champions to struggle as they made hard work of a 14-12 triumph against Gerald West’s bottom team, who led 11-2 at one stage before a displaced jack that baffled the underdogs and some classy bowls from skip Dave Childs turned things round. Elsewhere Ray Robinson’s team enjoyed an easy 20-7 win over Geoff Gray’s team to stay on top of the table, while Gordon Tucker’s team celebrated a surprisingly easy 23-8 victory over Merv Johnson’s team.
