A hat-trick by substitute Alex Arundel inspired East Lincs Combination leaders North Somercotes United to a 5-0 win against Mablethorpe Athletic on Saturday.

Somercotes made an ideal start when Nathan Hobson curled in a free-kick with barely three minutes played.

Within minutes of the restart Anthony Parnell raced clear, but was thwarted by an excellent challenge from Paul Chapman.

Marcus Mackay then made good saves to deny John Atkinson and Mark Sylvester before Cameron Turner played Sylvester in to fire home from 10 yards after 20 minutes.

Somercotes almost got a third before half-time when Liam Jaines had a long-range effort deflected onto the crossbar by Alex Carter.

The hosts picked up where they left off in the second half with Andy Willoughby having an strike well blocked by Mathew Sirett, and Hobson went close with a 25-yard effort.

Arundel replaced Atkinson on the hour mark and scored a penalty minutes later after Danny Stevens brought down Turner in the box.

Soon after, Arundel raced clear to slot in his second goal of the afternoon and completed his hat-trick with a tap-in to cap a clinical performance.

Mablethorpe manager Mick Stubbs was not pleased.

“North Somercotes were excellent in the final third and proved what a good team they are,” he said.

“We didn’t move the ball around well and made bad passes. We also made individual mistakes that put us under more pressure than we should have been.

“Although we didn’t play well, Jake Spybey was our man-of-the-match. He tried to use the ball well and worked hard in midfield.”
