Horncastle Town’s season is over - but manager Mickey Stones believes it is the correct decision.

Step seven of the National League System, which includes the Balcan Lighting Supplies Lincolnshire League, has been ended early, with all results expunged and no promotion or relegations following the Coronavirus pandemic.

This means the campaign has been brought to an early conclusion for the Wongers, who sat fifth in the table and were preparing to compete in the semi-finals of both the Challenge Cup and Supplementary Cup.

“I think it’s probably the sensible decision,” manager Stones told The News.

“As I said last week, I didn’t think we’d be able to finish the season at the moment as there’s a lot of upheaval for people.”

A statement from the FA, released on Thursday declared non-league below the National Leagues North and South would come to an abrupt halt.

It read: “The NLS (National League System) and the women’s football pyramid were able to build a consensus amongst their leagues and, where possible, aimed to create a consistent approach across all leagues, whilst taking into account the unique characteristics of each individual league.

“As a result, The FA and NLS steps three to six have reached a consensus that their 2019-20 season will now be brought to an end, and all results will be expunged.

“This will mean no promotion or relegation of clubs between NLS steps three to six, and no promotion to NLS step two.

“These decisions will also apply to the leagues and clubs who play at NLS step seven.”
