Steve Housham hopes that breaking Trinity’s winless streak will kick-start the season and get his men ‘back into the mix.’

The Gainsborough boss was over the moon with Saturday’s 2-1 victory at home to Barrow, and said it lifted the mood.

He told the Standard: “We got that monkey off our backs now.”

“It wasn’t for lack of trying, but I saw more bodies on the line and players really fighting for the cause, and that can kick start our season.”

The introduction of loan signing Taylor McKenzie from Sheffield Wednesday has helped shore up the defence, while fellow loanees Conner Robinson and Rhys Oates have impressed the boss.

He said: “I thought Taylor was a massive boost for us, we’ve known where our problems have been at the back, and I thought he came in and was excellent, it lifted a lot of players.”

“The lads up front, Conner and Rhys, I wouldn’t like to mark them.”

“Their workrate has been phenomenal. We’re hoping to extend their loans.”

On Saturday Trinity have a new experience, with a trip to Leamington, and Housham hopes a win will see his side climbing the table.

“We’re not that far behind a lot of teams, and I’m hoping that we’re talking about being back in the mix come 5pm on Saturday.”

Away from the Conference North, Trinity have been drawn at home to Rushall Olympic in the FA Cup on 28th September.

Housham wants his side to take just 90 minutes to book their place in the next round.

He explained: “It’s a very tough place to go, Rushall, and looking at the pyramid they’re only four or five places beneath us, so we’ll be trying to get it done at the first attempt.”

l On Tuesday night Trinity drew 2-2 at Worcester City, after conceding a 90th minute penalty.

Rhys Oates got both Blues goals, on 26 and 52 minuets.
