The defender, who first joined Tigers in February 2010, had an operation on his damaged knee ligaments earlier this year and has been working hard to recover.

Although he signalled his intentions to leave Sandy Lane back in September, he later returned to train and rehab with the Worksop coaching staff and both parties were hopeful of a return before the end of the current campaign.

However, despite his hard work on the training pitch and in the gym, he won’t feature in Worksop Town’s promotion bid this season.

He confirmed to the Guardian: “I’m going to miss this season out, and make sure I’m 100 per cent for next season.”

Shiels became a fan favourite with his all-action style of defending and picked up several awards at the club.

He filled in at right-back, left-back and central midfield during his four seasons, and scored nine goals.

The centre-half has made 129 appearances for Tigers, under managers Peter Rinkcavage, Martin McIntosh and Simon Clark.

On Saturday McIntosh will bring his Buxton side to Sandy Lane for a crucial Evo-Stik Northern Premier clash.
