Ton up for goals ace Batty as Brigg Town win first game

Brigg Town beat Appleby Frodingham 3-2 on Saturday for a winning start to the new NCEL Division One season.

A Josh Batty brace took his club tally to the magic 100 mark and joint manager Martin Pembleton said: “It wasn't a pretty game – it was very windy which was disruptive.

“But we are three points better off now than we were at this stage last season, so I am happy and can go away and enjoy my weekend.”

Batty's first goal came almost straight from the kick-off and Pembleton said: “It was definitely something we've worked on in the wide areas and getting balls across the front as quickly as we can.

“But, as good as it is to score early on, sometimes it can be too early.

“After the goal I think we became a little lackadaisical, taking too many touches in possession, and let them grow back into it.

“But to score a goal after 20 seconds of a new season, you can't really argue with it.”

Nathan Jarman headed 25th minute equaliser from a free kick before some fine play saw Adam Drury put the Zebras back ahead in added time before the break.

“Both their goals came from set plays. One came from a wide free kick, though to be fair to the lad, he has whipped it in with some pace and they are hard to defend against,” said Pembleton.

“It was a good goal but a poor one to concede on our behalf.

“Then the one from the corner, we've just got to be stronger, more aggressive and louder.

“As much as I don't want to be conceding from set plays, we've not concede from open play, so that is a positive. We have limited their chances.

“We will work on things we need to work on in training and hopefully improve.”

It was 3-1 on 55 minutes after Dayle Southall sent the ball goalbound and Batty made sure from close range.

“They were both joking about it when they came off,” said Pembleton. “But you would rather Batty puts it in and makes sure it hits the back of the net.

“If it had gone wide we'd have only come away with a draw and it would have been a different story. So I am happy for him to poke them in.”

Frodingham were far from finished and forced a good save from Alfie Appleby and also hit the bar before Eugene Ugenio pounced on a loose ball at the front post to make it 3-2 on 71 minutes.

Centre half Charlie Fleming made his Brigg debut and Pembleton said: “I thought he was the best player on the pitch.

“He has won 99 per cent of his duals against someone who has played in the Football League.

“He is big and strong and loves to fight. That is something we've needed. I wouldn't want to play against him.

“He is an absolute monster of a guy, but he backs it up as well which is important.

“Also, Reece York didn't get his goal today but he is a special player. As long as he's in my squad I will be one of the happiest managers in the league.”
