Town are Division One’s form side

Steve Toyne’s men have won five of their last six, with a draw the only blemish on that record.

Only one other side have picked up the same amount of points as Town from the last six games, and the purple patch continued at Phoenix Park on Saturday when they beat Rossington Main 1-0.

The game winning goal came three minutes from time, as a man who only played as a last resort got on the scoresheet.

Manager Toyne explained how Jon Roper came to play up front and net the winner.

“We had three or four missing and Jon wasn’t supposed to play because of an groin injury, but because we were short he went up front in the last 15 minutes and he scored a good goal,” said Toyne, adding: “He was excellent.”

Fifteenth-placed Town, who have games in hand over many of the sides around them in the table, travel to Yorkshire Amateur tomorrow (Saturday) and Toyne has set his sights on a position much higher in Division One.

“We’re flying at the moment and I would like to finish in the top 10, that would be nice.”

“But if we lose the likes of Matt Smith and one or two others, we could be back to square one again,” he warned.

Along with a turnaround on the pitch, the gaffer and his players have been encouraged by a change in the atmosphere at Phoenix Park.

He told the Guardian: “The backing we’ve had from the group of young lads from Dinnington has been brilliant and we’re so appreciative of them.”

“We’re chuffed, the atmosphere has been excellent and that’s what it’s all about,” he added.
