Organised chaos as Skegness teams battle it out at Holme Pierrepont Triathlon Relay

Members of Skegness Triathon Club took part in the Holme Pierrepoint Triathlon Relay Championships in Nottingham.

Known within the triathlon community as ‘organised chaos’, three teams of four entered what had become a slightly truncated race.

Due to the numerous heatwaves experienced this summer, the swim leg had been cancelled earlier in the week due to high levels of blue-green algae blooms.

Ironically, the weather on the day was bleak, continuous rain offered an alternative to getting wet instead of the swim.

In place of the swim leg, there was a 1k run where your teammate was waiting to be tagged, they would do their run and then tag the next person.

This would then be repeated throughout the 15 km bike ride and then a 5km run around the Regatta lake.

At times it was hard to keep track of who was where on the course.

The inter-club rivalry resulted in the team of Lee St Quinton, Martin Simmons, Paul Smith and Mark Pinott (Team Way Too Serious) beating, by 30 seconds, a team consisting of Vicki Bush, Claire Draper, Jake Stephens and Ethan Fletcher (Team Let’s Have a Bit of Fun).

The third Skegness team were unfortunate to be loaded with the really strong swimmers, not ideal for an event that now didn’t have a swim.

Despite this the team of Amber Spiers, John Atkinson, Toni Atkinson and Sally Giles (Team Let’s Just Get it Done) put on a gallant performance and completed the race, wet and wild!

Skegness Pier provided support to enable participation in an eye-catching new kit.
