Surprise daffodils add colour to successful spring show in East Barkwith

A kaleidoscope of floral colour was created at a successful spring show hosted by the Barkwith and District Gardeners Association.

Entries were up by 30 per cent for the East Barkwith show, including some from new members, which was encouraging to see.

And spring arrived in style at the village event thanks to some bright floral arrangements and a host of good-quality daffodils.

The success of the daffodil section came as a surprise to doubtful members, considering the bad weather of recent weeks. Most classes within the section showed good numbers of flowers.

The floral arrangements were similarly impressive, with spring flowers and foliage shown off in vases.

Floral art was created in a wine glass, and there were also exhibits depicting an Easter parade, which made it hard work for judge Jenny Hippisley.

The number of entries for the handicraft section was a little sparse, but that seems to be normal these days, with fewer and fewer people enjoying knitting or crocheting as a hobby.

Card-making was also less of an attraction than last year, but the show still featured a fair number of exhibits for judge Jackie Toyne to decide upon. A spokesperson for the association said: “It’s amazing how inventive crafters are. We should all do more!”

The produce section for baking, and jams and jellies, was well supported, and judge Sarah Stamp had a terrific supply of baking to adjudicate on.

One of the highlights of this year’s spring show was the introduction of a junior section. Two classes, for under-11 and 11-to-16-year-olds, invited entries for an Easter hat and for decorations of springs flowers and foliage, with accessories allowed.

One of the entrants in the upper-age junior class, Amelia Brooks, showed off her skills with a white, woven hat nicely decorated with flowers and Easter eggs. It won her the main prize.

Other winners at the show included Pam Flint, Lyn Small, Jo Deaton, Maxine Gibson and Jenny Petit.

The association meets every fourth Friday at 7.30 pm in East Barkwith Village Hall on Lincoln Road. Anyone interested in joining should contact Christine Raynor on 01507 313561.
