Chris Funnell's side had eclipsed the club's previous best ever sequence of 12 straight wins when they defeated Loughborough Students on Saturday.

But they were second best to an impressive Wellingborough side who scored in each half to move to the top of the Northern Premier League Midlands Division table.

Boss Funnell said: "We’ve had a fantastic run and an unbelievable 18 months.

“This feeling after defeat has been a rarity, but I’m not one to shy away when we lose.

“We were well beaten by a very good Wellingborough side.

"We didn’t cover ourselves in glory through our performance, but these lads have given me everything and they will continue to do so."

Jack O'Connell gave the visitors the lead after 15 minutes with a looping header from a long throw.

The Poachers had given Tom Siddons his first start and Shaun Archer returned to the starting line-up, with Macca Burdass and Zak Munton dropping to the bench and Layton Maddison included in the match day squad for the first time this season.

The visitors, who had won 5-1 at Basford United at the weekend, enjoyed more possession throughout the game but it remained a competitive contest.

Boston struggled to create clear chances but had a strong penalty shout waved away when Matt Cotton was bundled off the ball.

Instead, the Doughboys doubled their lead after 53 minutes when the pacy Zayn Hakeem raced clear and slid home under keeper Sam Edwards.

On Saturday the Poachers switch their attention to the FA Cup when Sherwood Colliery are the visitors to the Mortgages For You Stadium. Kick-off is at 3pm.

TOWN: Edwards, Gibbons (Munton), Smith (Houlston), Tate (Burdass), Ford, Ging, Bayliss, Archer (Maddison), Siddons (L Wilson), Limb, Cotton
