Viking Way: Walk of the month heads to historic Caistor

Walkers are being invited to step out on another stretch of the Viking Way as this month’s featured route heads to the historic town of Caistor.

The second in the “Walk of the Month” series highlights a neat 3.75-mile circular route linking Caistor with nearby Nettleton, right on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

The route includes a section of the long-distance trail, giving walkers a flavour of the varied landscapes it crosses.

Caistor itself has plenty to explore along the way. Once a Roman fortified town, parts of its ancient defensive walls can still be seen on the route.

The Market Place remains at the heart of the town, marked by its distinctive lion statue, installed in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, and surrounded by Georgian and Victorian buildings within a designated conservation area.

Walkers will also be stepping onto one of the newest sections of the Viking Way, created last year to make crossing the Caistor bypass safer.

Families are encouraged to get involved too, with I-Spy sheets and a “50 Things” list available online to keep younger walkers engaged along the route.

Those who prefer to walk in company can take part in a guided walk on May 20, led by the county council’s Rights of Way team as part of the Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival.

Maps, activity sheets and more circular routes can be found via the Viking Way pages on Visit Lincolnshire at visitlincolnshire.com/things-to-do/viking-way/.

Stretching from the Humber estuary to Rutland, the Viking Way takes in some of the county’s best landscapes – offering everything from gentle strolls to serious long-distance challenges.
