Caretaker manager Nathan Jarman admitted it had been a baptism of fire as he led Gainsborough Trinity to a heavy home defeat against relegation rivals Southport.

Captain Jarman, asked by the club to take temporary charge of the side following the decision to part company with manager Dave Frecklington last week, was unable to plot a return to winning ways.

Trinity slipped back into the relegation zone after a 3-0 defeat, but Jarman said: “I really enjoyed it, but it was a baptism of fire.

“I can see why Dave (Frecklington) used to get frustrated.

“We looked OK going forward and looked like we were going to do something for the first 35 minutes.

“But we didn’t take our chance and got punished. It was a difficult one.”

Jarman said he had no intention of applying for a manager’s job in the near future, but insisted he had relished the opportunity to lead the Holy Blues.

“I have absolutely not applied for the manager’s job — I will be playing for the next manager,” he said.

“I really enjoyed it. I will do it in the future, but while I have got a few legs left in me I will carry on playing.

“I was glad I got to experience it from the dugout.

“The players gave it everything.

“I like the way we played. We were attacking and expansive. If we had got the first goal...

“Hopefully we can get ourselves out of it (relegation trouble).”

Jason Gilchrist broke the deadlock at the far post in the 42nd minute and doubled the visitors’ advantage in first half injury-time.

It was rough on Trinity who matched Southport at times and might have taken the lead midway through the period when Thomas Davie’s cross was just too high for Ash Worsfold.

However, the contest was over just five minutes later when Gilchrist completed his treble after Dion Charles struck the post.

Keeper Henrich Ravas, again Trinity’s man-of-the-match, had no chance.

Jarman added: “It mirrored our season so far.”

Tom Davie went off at half-time with a bad injury after a challenge from David Morgan.

Jarman said: “It looked bad. He has got six stud marks down his ankle.”
