Thursday afternoon’s race meeting at Market Rasen Racecourse yielded a good spread of results, both predictable and unpredictable ones, with two winning favourites from the seven races alongside a winner at double-figure odds and some other generous prices.

The first race was an extended two-mile conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle (12.20). The Joe Williamson-ridden Bathgate was the favourite and ran a very good race, but was beaten a neck by Brian Ellison’s 7/1 shot, Freddy Robinson, who won under three-pound claimer Joshua Thompson. The leading pair were followed in Uhtred Ragnarson and Wind Your Neck In.

Next was a juvenile hurdle run over the same trip (12.50). Though it looked towards the closing stages as if Dan Skelton’s Private Dancer was going to win, it was the favourite - Warren Greatrex’s Lunar Orbit - who kept on to take the lead and win by three quarters of a length under Sean Bowen. Lights Go Down was a close third at 17/2.

Race three was a two and a half mile novices’ hurdle (1.20). The JP McManus-owned Harry Lowes was the hot favourite at 5/6, but he had no final kick of speed for the last furlong, allowing Tom Lacey’s Montemares - whose starting price was 5/1 - to take the lead and win comfortably by over three lengths under Stan Sheppard.

Following was a three-mile handicap hurdle (1.50). There were just four runners here, two of which took position as joint market leaders; Jukebox d’Eddy and Alltalknoaction, both at 15/8. With the latter falling at the second last, though, the race was between Jukebox d’Eddy and Great Name That in the final couple of furlongs. With just half a length between them, Jukebox d’Eddy was the victor in the end under Brian Hughes.

We had a double-figure odds winner in the second last race, a handicap chase run over two miles and three furlongs (2.50). The Venetia Williams-trained Girls Best Friend was the main fancy and led the field through the race but was challenged by 14/1 shot Florita, who made the most of being bottom of the handicap to win by over three lengths for trained Sam England.

Finally, the afternoon rounded off with a bumper (3.20). In a fairly competitive race, Fergal O’Brien’s charge Get Out Of My Way made his way from last to first under Jonathan Burke to win by over two lengths to the runner-up, Dan Skelton’s Lady Boujee. They were followed in by Chemical Dave and Midnight Escape.
