Carlton-in-Lindrick: Man fined after three bags of cannabis discovered in his home

Ian Steward, of Knaton Road, pleaded guilty to possession of a Class B drug at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 19th Feburary.

In mitigation Donna Fawcett, prosecuting, told the court that Steward told the police he had become dependent on cannabis as it ‘chilled him out’ and eased the pain he suffered due to a medical condition.

Steward’s defence solicitor told magistrates that, although Steward admitted to taking Class A drugs in the past for which he had served a long-term jail sentence, he had been ‘out of trouble for a good 15 years’ and was now in a stable relationship which was ‘motivating him to get off drugs’.

She added: “He has managed to turn his life around thanks to his girlfriend.”

“He does take a methadone prescription and is obviously still taking cannabis, but he hopes to be drug free by Christmas.

Steward was fined £50 by magistrates. He was also ordered to pay £25 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
