Binbrook School boosts food supply for families with help of church

There has been a lot of talk about children who get free school meals continuing to get that support during the Covid-19 crisis.

One village school is going that bit further to support the family of any pupil who needs it.

Last week, Binbrook Primary School put a message out to all parents with the offer of a food box.

This was made possible thanks to a generous offer from Market Rasen New Life Church, who said they would provide the food boxes.

Head teacher Anna Hall said: “Being so rural, we were concerned about the ability of parents to get out and get provisions.

“Many parents rely on public transport and others have limited income.

“We felt it was the right thing to do.”

Mike May, one of the church’s leadership team, was on hand to help with the distribution on Monday.

He said: “We are pleased to help in this way.

“Many of the items in the food boxes were donated to us by Market Rasen Primary School when they closed their kitchen, so we thank them too for making this possible.”

These food boxes were a one-off, but from next week, the school will be subsidising boxes for those who want them, provided by Ideal Meals, who have been providing food hampers for the free school meals families.

Spokesman Lynne Wilson said: “With restrictions tightened and lockdown orders issued out across the county, Ideal is concerned about the many children who are not receiving a substantial meal.

“Ideal has offered schools the option of providing their free school meal parents with a food hamper containing enough food items to make five nutritious lunches.

“Much needed groceries are flying off the shelves; these hampers provide parents with a week’s worth of lunches without having to try and source the items themselves, giving parents peace of mind that their children will have at least one nutritious meal a day.”

Ms Hall added: “We are very grateful to Ideal Meals for the work they are doing and, in particular, thank Karmen, who has delivered and distributed the food hampers.”
