Boston United making good progress under new boss says Teale after close game with leaders

Boston United defender Connor Teale believes the side are showing good progression under boss Paul Hurst after pushing National League leaders York City all the way in yesterday's 1-0 home defeat.

Ben Brookes' 48th minute finish, after keeper Dan Cameron had parried an Ollie Banks shot, proved decisive.

But Teale feels the club have been heading in the right direction under Hurst, since the new manager came into steady a sinking ship in January.

“I felt it was a pretty even game – a lot more even than when we went up there on Boxing Day,” said Teale.

“We've had a few chances and we've hit the bar twice, but we just couldn't get the goal.

“We have had some really good results against teams higher up in the table recently and I think it's showing our progression.

“Since the gaffer has come in, I think we have changed a lot stylistically. I think we are a lot more comfortable on the ball and more willing to play out and create a lot more chances.

“I feel like he and Doigy (assistant Chris Doig) have been a breath of fresh air, and the lads have really responded to it.”

Despite the disappointment of losing yesterday, the Boston squad are back in today preparing to bounce back at struggling Brackley Town tomorrow.

“The good thing about football is that there is always another game coming up,” he said.

“This is a short turnaround so we need to recover right and be ready for Monday.”

Teale has shown his versatility in the back line, having also played at centre half, and he said: “As long as I am playing I am happy.

“I've been playing right back a lot recently and I know I still have a lot to learn.”

Although in mid-table, Boston could still mathematically be relegated, but three points tomorrow should seal safety for definite.

“It would be massive,” he said. “I was here towards the end of last season and I know how much survival means to the fans and players, so it would be amazing to get that sorted on Monday.

“We have five games left now, so it's five games in which to try to impress, finish as high as we can in the league and keep progressing.”

The York clash attracted a season-high home crowd of 3,198 and he added: “It was good playing in front of that big crowd and again reminded me a lot of the end of last season when we had big crowds – long may that continue.”
