Boston take full advantage of red

Boston United took full advantage of a red card for Conor Wilkinson to win 3-0 at Solihull Moors in their final National League away game of the season.

But boss Paul Hurst admitted he wasn't sure if the game would be completed after referee Sunny Singh Gill took the sides off for 25 minutes aftrer the 65th minute dismissal of Wilkinson with the official alleging discriminatory language had been aimed at him by Wilkinson.

Hurst said: “They were in their room having a discussion and there was a lack of communication – we didn't know if the game would be abandoned and we'd have to come back in midweek.

“The players then have to warm up again and you start to worry about injuries.

“But thankfully we got the game done.”

He continued: “I thought we had started to play better second half, but of course the red card helped us. I thnk we smelt blood.

“Credit to the lads. You have to beat what's in front of you and whatever the situation is.

“Today we took advantage of having the extra man and ran out really comfortable winners in the end.

“We have put a decent points total on the board, but why not finish it off in style with a win this Saturday if we can?”

An FA spokesperson said: “We are aware of an alleged incident of discrimination towards the referee during the National League match between Solihull Moors and Boston United.

"We are taking this matter very seriously and will review the details of the match official's report before taking the appropriate action.”

Goalkeeper Louis Chadwick was handed his National League debut for Boston but had little to do on the day and finished with a debut clean sheet.

United took the lead two minutes after the red card - with Lewis Baines turning Matty Carson's cross past his own keeper.

The Pilgrims doubled their advantage in the 77th minute when Marcel Lavinier had two stabs at getting the ball into the path of Jacob Hazel, who swivelled neatly and beat Laurie Walker with a rasping left-footer.

Maguire then converted substitute Tom Cursons' assist from the left - but Hazel was belatedly flagged offside after being deemed to be interfering with Walker's line of sight.

However, Maguire was undeterred and did score his goal on the stroke of full-time after dinking Matty Carson's ball from the left over Walker.
